There was a time when everyone loved a good draught. But last three years Indra God has showered enough on Indian soil, and all the people those who were happy because of draught were sad. (Also draught has been now more for jholawala types and not for World Bank types). The saddest person was our economist, honest, intelligent, Oxford and Cambridge educated, ex-world banker, who loses sleep if a terror accused is arrested, Prime minister Doctor Manmohan Singh. Every bomb blast in India gives him a peaceful sleep. After all bomb blasts helps in the overall economic growth of India. His slogan is Give me Blood I will give you GDP.
(Since Government says bomb blast of 14/7 was not an intelligence failure and future prime minister indirectly says one off bomb blast is necessary; it makes me wonder is Government of India organising this bomb blasts? Because, I have still not understood how 26/11 terrorist could roam freely shooting people from CST to Taj Hotel, crossing Head office of RBI, Navy Base and Police Commissioner’s office, which are guarded 24 hours with armed men).
For the uninitiated let me clarify every bomb blast adds to India’s GDP and gives an immediate boost to the industrial growth. Let’s look at bomb blasts contribution to Indian economy, step by step:
· It reduces population.
· Family, relatives of dead, get rich by insurance and compensation money. If they are poor they move up the poverty ladder.
· The family, relatives, friends become instant celebrity.
· Bomb Blasts have moved to 2.0 from 1.0; i.e. some are getting luckier twice because of Bomb blast 2.0; i.e. loosing family members second time, which means assured source of income.
· News Channels, portals, newspapers, magazines; viewership, readership goes up instantly.
· Mobile companies sell more handsets and make more money on uses of SMS, Twitter etc.
· Places of Bomb Blast become tourist spot; don’t believe me; just checkout Leopold Cafe.
· More bomb blasts attract FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in terms of insurance, mobile, medical and media companies.
· FDI also happens in the area of social entrepreneurship i.e. more unaccounted funds come for the human right organisations for terrorist and safety of minority community.
· People’s attention gets diverted from scams, price rise and gives politicians to focus on new ways of corruption.
There was a Savitri who got Satyavan back from Lord Yama. There was Basanti Devi, wife of Deshabandhu Chitaranjan Das who called the youth of India for revenge for Lala Lajpat Rai’s death and inspired Bhagat Singh to do so. Today; most of the wives, as well as husband (if they are educated) try to encash the death. It could be by writing books, joining political parties, addressing seminars. The only known (to me) exception has been Paramveer Late Sub Inspector Tukaram Ombale’s family.
In today’s age and time, no point talking of Abhimanyu, when, the future prime minister aspirants, Ex-prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s children generally have a chat with his killers. After all it helps in winning elections.
Don’t be surprised if Taliban, Indian Mujaheedin, Lasker e Toyaba, ISI, etc. get listed in Bombay Stock Exchange. They will be oversubscribed several times; after all, number of shares one holds of these organisations will be directly proportional to his secular standing in the society. The who’s who of corporate world, those who were fortunate to lose their family members in attack on Taj and Oberoi; will ask to reserve a quota for them in share allocation.
It is not Kalyug stupid, it is just GDP i.e. Greed over Dead body and Patriotism. That’s why; everyone loves a Bomb Blast in India, keeps voting secular government back into power and no one talks of revenge.

It was the start of a season-long television marketing campaign to sell the merits of biofuel to Americans. On the surface, the self-proclaimed 'greening of Nascar' ( National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing )) is merely a transparent - and, one suspects, ill-fated - exercise in an environmental form of whitewashing for the sport: call it 'greenwashing'. But the partnership between a beloved American pastime and the biofuel lobby also marks the latest attempt to sway public opinion in favour of a truly irresponsible policy. The US spends about $6 billion a year on federal support for ethanol production through tax credits, tariffs and other programmes. Thanks to this financial assistance, a sixth of the world's corn supply is burned in American cars. That is enough corn to feed 350 million people for an entire year. Government support of rapid growth in biofuel production has contributed to disarray in food production. Indeed, as a result of official policy in the US and Europe, including aggressive production targets, biofuel consumed more than 6.5% of global grain output and 8% of the world's vegetable oil in 2010, up from 2% of grain supplies and virtually no vegetable oil in 2004. This year, after a particularly bad growing season, we see the results. Let us understand the difference between Lakshmi and money for money’s sake
Chetan Bhagat Happy Diwali to all readers. Since Diwali is a time we worship Lakshmi, or the goddess of wealth, i thought i would focus in this piece on the place of wealth in our society today. I also want to highlight the difference between Lakshmi and money, which may seem similar but are not the same. Before that, i start with an incident. Last week, i was in a session conducted by leading Hollywood filmmaker Oliver Stone, as part of a film festival organised in Mumbai. One of Oliver’s famous films is Wall Street (1984), which had its sequel come out recently. In the original film, Michael Douglas played Gordon Gekko, a crafty, unscrupulous, yet dashing financier. Gekko, with his signature line, “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good”, became one of the most memorable characters in US cinema history. I asked Oliver why he thought Gekko became so popular. He said it was because Gekko is successful, especially in terms of money. It doesn’t matter that he is unethical, selfish, greedy, or a terrible human being. Americans became obsessed with material wealth in the 1980s. ‘Greed is good’ was just the validation they needed at the time. People didn’t care about a person’s values, people cared about a person’s money. At a time of year when we pray to Lakshmi, or the goddess of material wealth, it is fitting to introspect if we too are slowly becoming the same. Why else do our political leaders loot the very people who elected them? Why do they stuff their own pockets with hundreds of crores they couldn’t possibly spend in their lifetimes? Why would an army general want to pocket a flat meant for a soldier’s widow? Why do so many intelligent, educated, respected bureaucrats succumb to corruption? The answer is simple: money, or rather the importance our society has begun to attach to money. Don’t get me wrong. Money is extremely important. Poverty is a disease, and surviving well in the modern world does require a certain amount of material wealth. However, above this level, people don’t seek money to satisfy material needs. Beyond that, money has other uses. There are many reasons why our politicians and government officials steal it. I list some of them. One, money gives stature – the bigger your house, the more lavish your parties and the more high-end the places you shop – and gives you a certain place in society today that is above others. We have newspapers filled with ads of luxury goods, as if acquiring them is life’s ultimate aim. We celebrate rich lists and people who live in expensive houses. We make TV shows about expensive weddings and judge people by their residential address. Today, a woman decked in jewellery and with a designer bag and shoes may be seen as of a higher stature than, say, a schoolteacher in a cotton sari who teaches hundreds of kids. People who earn high salaries make more news than, say, brave journalists who expose scams or selfless doctors who help the poor. In such a societal set-up, the temptation to seek wealth irrespective of the means is especially high. Two, money gives a sense of security. This is a genuine benefit of money, as retirement planning is about building assets in your working life to be used later. However, politicians have a particular sense of insecurity owing to the innately uncertain nature of their jobs. They can be elected in and out of office. Money stolen by politicians is often kept for their party campaigns, to fight the next election. Being in power, and keeping that position is more important (and gets you more attention) than being a real leader and role model. So, you have elected MPs robbing citizens. Since the majority of Indian citizens don’t care about corruption issues and will vote on caste, religion or even factors such as dynasty over performance, the looting never stops. Stature and security are constructs of the mind. The irony is, no matter how much money you have, if you don’t fundamentally value yourself from within, you will never feel that status despite the crores stashed away. That is why corrupt people keep on accumulating money until they get caught. They hope the money will give them a better place in life. However, since they have stolen and not earned the wealth, the crime gnaws at them from within and they can never be at peace. They have accumulated money for sure, but they haven’t accumulated Lakshmi. Lakshmi is wealth accumulated through honest and fair means. Money can be stolen as well. Lakshmi brings peace and happiness to the person who earns it. Stolen money only brings emptiness to the soul. If you notice Lakshmi’s idol, she has gold coins around her, signifying wealth. However, she is also seated on a lotus flower, and holds lotuses in her hands. The lotus is a sign of purity and peace, signifiying spiritual well-being; of purity and beauty even in the muddy waters of the world. Without this peace, wealth has no meaning. This festive season, when you pray, ask not for money, but for Lakshmi – wealth attained through pure means that keeps the mind as peaceful and beautiful as the lotus. The corrupt who steal from us don’t know this difference, and are merely collecting money. No matter how big their Diwali parties or lavish their puja ceremonies are, true Lakshmi will never come to them. She only comes to those who are pure at heart. KOLKATA: Salwa Judum, or 'peace march' , appears to have made a silent entry into West Bengal, albeit on the sly. The system was introduced by the Chhattisgarh government in June, 2005, in the Dantewada district where the state administration armed villagers to combat the Maoists.
The anti-Naxalite people's resistance movement eventually received bipartisan support from both the opposition and the rural parties. State police even trained Dantewada villagers to handle firearms to take on the Maoists. However, the Chhattisgarh government had to face criticism from various quarters for taking such counter-terrorism steps.
Officially, the CPM-led government in West Bengal never hinted that it would introduce Salwa Judum. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru shut the door to negotiations on the (India-China ) boundary on July 1,1954,according to a just-released book by A G Noorani based on archival research and hitherto unpublished material.And this Nehrus refusal to negotiate,and the 1960 rebuff to Zhou Enlai when he was visiting and appeared ready to settle the issue may well have sowed the seeds of the 1962 India-China war.The important and explicit directive,from Nehru,in a 17-para memorandum,cited by Noorani in his book,says: Both as flowing from our policy and as a consequence of our Agreement with China,this frontier should be considered a firm and definite one which is not open to discussion with anybody.There may be very minor points of discussion.Even these should not be raised by us. Noorani,an expert on legal and constitutional issues,writes in the book,India-China Boundary Problem.1846-1947 : History and Diplomacy,that India unilaterally revised its official map.The legend boundary undefined in the western (Kashmir) and middle sectors (Uttar Pradesh) in the official maps of 1948 and 1950 were dropped in the new map of 1954.A firm clear line was shown instead. Noorani says that Nehrus July 1,1954 directive was apparently in pursuance of a decision taken on March 24,1953 to formulate a new line for the boundary.It was a fateful decision.Old maps were burnt.One former foreign secretary told this writer how,as a junior official,he himself was obliged to participate in this fatuous exercise. It is speculated that the official was Ram Sathe,Indias last consul-general in Xinjiang and later Ambassador to China.The book,dedicated to Sathes memory,was released on December 16 at Vice President Hamid Ansaris houseduring Chinese Premier Wen Jiabaos visit.It mentions that new maps were printed showing Northern and North Eastern frontiers without any reference to any line.Nehru wanted these maps to be sent to embassies and introduced to the public and be used in schools.Describing as historically untrue every one of Nehrus statements in his letter to Chinese Premier Zhou En-lai on March 22,1959,Noorani states that as late as 1950,Indian maps showed the boundary as undefined.The unpublished archival material in Chapter 12,Aftermath,quotes extensively from the 17-page memo and says a divided Cabinet,an irresponsible opposition,an uninformed press and a restive Parliament,fed on bad history held Nehru hostage.

"On the issues of development the ruling party, the opposition and the media in Gujarat join hands to ensure that various projects come to the state. Why this does not happen in Maharashtra?," he asked in an informal interaction with media persons here last night.
Pawar was responding to the queries about Opposition in some quarters to the Jaitapur nuclear power project in Ratnagiri in Maharashtra on environmental grounds.
"Similar objections were raised when Enron power plant was set up saying that it would damage horticulture in Konkan. Nothing of the sort happened," Pawar said adding that Maharashtra suffered from deficit in power supply and needed additional power plants to progress on the industrial front and generation of employment.
"If every project in the state is opposed, how would it develop?," he asked.

These values ensure coordination between individuals, though they may come from different backgrounds. Once management became a formal science, thinkers assumed that modern companies progressively would replace social capital-based, informal coordination mechanisms, with formal ones like management policies, hierarchies and bureaucratic rules. Does money buy happiness? Are people living in rich countries happier than people in poorer countries? Does economic growth lead to happiness? Is it possible to measure happiness or well-being? There was once a time when such questions were left to philosophers to understand. Quantifying happiness was out of question; attaching a money value to it was blasphemy. And then entered in this field the scientist. Economics of happiness is now a growingly large field of research. Social scientists have begun to question the age-old assumption that all economic activity is in the pursuit of happiness to maximise what in economics jargon is called 'utility'. Economists have started measuring happiness, conducting statistical analysis to investigate the factors that 'determine' happiness and if money happens to be one of them. The Great Recession in Europe and the US and its painfully slow demise has led politicians to join the search for more appropriate measures of national well-being and happiness. The age-old metric of economic activity - the gross domestic product - is felling out of favour with many western governments. In September 2009, on the first anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers, French President Nicolas Sarkozy asked other nations to drop their obsessions on GDP and a adopt measure of 'well-being' as the metric of progress. A year later, the British Prime Minister David Cameron asked the Office of National Statistics in the UK to produce an index to gauge the general wellbeing of the people by assessing their psychological and environmental well-being. A number of other countries, including Canada and Australia, are also considering developing such a measure. Cameron, however, wants to go a step further. He wants to use the new measure to steer public policy. The concept of measuring progress with happiness and not economic activity is not entirely western. The former king of Bhutan coined the term gross national happiness about four decades ago and the Bhutanese government has developed detailed surveys to measure it. American politicians, of course, have a greater faith in the market than fellow politicians across the Atlantic or up north in Canada. But they too are finding it hard convince the American public that GDP growth reflects prosperity of all. The US economy is in what seems to be a long phase of jobless (read: joyless) recovery with stagnating wages. The growth in GDP for the past few quarters, therefore, does not reflect the plight of the families most hit by the recession. Economists and psychologists are devising ways of measuring happiness and well-being. Alan Krueger, former assistant secretary for economic policy and chief economist of the US department of treasury, and psychologist Daniel Kahneman and colleagues have developed what they call the 'national time accounting' (NTA) - as opposed to national income accounting, which is used to measure income or GDP. NTA is based on surveys that involve asking respondents to keep a diary of their daily activity and record their feeling about each of the activity on an 'enjoyment scale'.........................................................................

Dhanteras is most commonly known as the day when Bharatiyas traditionally buy new utensils or metal. It is also the day for celebrating wealth. Dhanteras is also the day for remembering Yama, the God of death as well as the day for remembering Dhanavantri, the Divine physician.

Dhanteras reminds death as well as health while celebrating wealth. Dhanteras celebration is most appropriate in today’s world when corporate are at a loss to maintain the employees health and company’s wealth.

In Bharat new books of accounts are worshipped and opened on Deepawali day. The books are marked with the signs of Swastik, Ganesha and Shubh Laabh meaning auspicious profit. It sets the approach for business activity i.e the profit has to come by fair means. No need to read books or attend conferences for business ethics.

I quite liked the session by Sandeep Singh. It was good thought to know our freedom fighters from completely different angle and we can really associate our self with them as we are hearing about them since childhood.

I was reading today ET’s Corporate Dossier, there it was given that in other B-Schools students are taught from Indian epics like Mahabharata, Chanakya’s life, etc. May be that kind of sessions(may be once in month) with us can be quite useful.

Looking for such more sessions in future.

Martyrdom centenary of Madan Lal Dhingra (1883-1909)

India won freedom due to the blood and tears shed by hundreds of nameless revolutionaries and their families who braved British barbarity and faced death, deportation, imprisonment and forfeiture of property. Freedom was certainly not won by pleas, prayers and petitions. It was won substantially by violent and armed struggle by revolutionaries, a process that culminated in the Naval uprising of 1946. The struggle for freedom was carried out not only in India, but also abroad, by people such as Shyamji Krishnavarma, Veer Savarkar, Madam Bhikaji Cama, Barrister Sardar Singh Rana, Virendranath Chattopadhyaya, Sardar Ajit Singh, Lala Hardayal, Rasbehari Bose, Raja Mahendra Pratap and Champakraman Pillay. In this illustrious list of fiery patriots, Madan Lal Dhingra stands out for his sheer courage and supreme sacrifice. Madan Lal Dhingra went to the gallows on August 17, 1909. The centenary of his martyrdom is an occasion for us to remember his immortal saga.

Madan Lal Dhingra was born on September 18, 1883 in Amritsar. His father was an eye specialist and Civil Surgeon of Amritsar. Some say he was the first Indian doctor to reach that eminent position. Madan Lal was the sixth of his seven sons. Two of Madan Lal’s brothers were doctors, one was an MRCP (1895); two other brothers were barristers. Madan Lal was married and had a son. If he had desired, he could have lived a life of luxury. But he chose to be a martyr for India’s freedom struggle. Madan Lal Dhingra studied for Diploma in Civil Engineering at University College, London from 1906-09 (it is interesting to note that Dadabhai Naoroji was Professor of Gujarati in this college from 1856 to 1866. Ravindranath Tagore studied English literature at the same college during 1878-1880.

India House and contact with Savarkar
In 1905, Shyamji Krishna Varma purchased a house on 65, Cromwell Avenue, London to be used as the students’ hostel. This was inaugurated as India House by Henry Myers Hyndman, President of the Social Democratic Federation and a votary of India’s freedom on July 1, 1905. This India House is not to be confused with the present office of the Indian High Commission also called India House, which was built in the late 1920s and inaugurated by King George V and Queen Mary on July 8, 1930. Dadabhai Naoroji, Lala Lajpat Rai, Madame Cama, Harry Quelch of the Justice paper and Mr. Sweeny of the Positivist Review were present at the ceremony. In 1905, Lokmanya Tilak’s Kesari carried an editorial about Shyamji’s activities in London including his starting of the students’ hostel, India House. In Pune, Savarkar read about Shyamji’s activities in Tilak’s Kesari. He also came across an issue of Shyamji’s monthly Indian Sociologist, which contained information about scholarships being offered to Indian students by Shyamji. In March 1906, Savarkar applied for the Shivaji scholarship. Tilak gave him a reference and also assured that Savarkar had no intention of seeking government employment. Accordingly, Savarkar arrived in London on June 15, 1906. Savarkar went to London ostensibly to study law. But he had other ideas in mind. He wanted to observe at first hand, the strength of the British people which enabled them to rule over India and also to note their weaknesses and to think of ways of using them to achieve India’s freedom. Savarkar also wanted to establish contact with Indian students who came from all parts of India and to enlist them in India’s freedom struggle. Such meetings were easier in London than in India. In 1907 there were some 700 Indian students in Great Britain, of whom 380 were in London alone. Savarkar also wanted to establish contacts with revolutionaries of other countries like Russia, China, Ireland, Turkey, Egypt and Iran. He wanted to learn the art of making bombs from them, and put that knowledge and friendship into use for concerted attempts to overthrow the British rule. He also wanted to smuggle pistols and ammunition into India.

The speed of Savarkar’s activities in London was breathtaking. India House was constantly in the news from 1906 to 1910. Savarkar started regular Sunday meetings to discuss various topics related to India’s future. It soon became popular among Indian students. In an interview given to Campbell Green of Sunday Chronicle in March 1909, Savarkar said, “India House is an inexpensive hostel. But for admission as a lodger, one does not need to have any specific political opinion. All that he has to do is to pay one pound (per week) for board and lodge. Political discussions do take place. Persons like yourselves and those who say that the British Raj is a divine dispensation also come here. Discussions take place. Those who can convince others by means of truth and logic win the day.” Among those who attended India House were Bhai Parmananda, Lala Hardayal (founder of the Ghadar Party), Virendranath Chattopadhyaya (revolutionary and brother of Sarjoini Naidu), Senapati Bapat, Hemachandra Das (who was Transported to Andamans), MPT Acharya, VVS Aiyar, Gyan Chand Varma (secretary of Abhinav Bharat), Dadabhai Naoroji, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, Madame Cama, Sardar Singh Rana, Dadasaheb Karandikar and Khaparde (both Tilak’s lawyers), Ravi Shankar Shukla (later Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh), Saiyyad Haider Raza, Asaf Ali, Shapurjee Saklatwala (nephew of Dadabhai Naoroji and founder of the Communist Party of Britain). Interestingly, the young Barrister Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi met Savarkar at India House. Revolutionaries from other countries such as Egypt, Ireland, Russia, China and Turkey used to attend. One such Russian revolutionary who attended these meetings was Lenin.

In one of the Sunday meetings at India House, Savarkar was delivering an impassioned speech on India’s freedom. Madan Lal and his friends were creating a ruckus in the adjacent room. The din forced Savarkar to interrupt his speech and peep into the adjacent room. There he saw Madan Lal and his friends enjoying themselves. “What’s the matter, Madan? You talk of action and bravery and avoid coming to our weekly meetings. Is this the bravery you keep talking about?” reprimanded Savarkar. The words shamed Dhingra. He quietly left India House and did not show his face to Savarkar for several days thereafter. When he mustered courage to enter India House again, it was to find out if Savarkar was still annoyed with him. When the two met, Savarkar behaved as if nothing had happened between them. He spoke with the same affection. Emboldened, Dhingra asked, “Has the time for martyrdom come?” Savarkar replied, “If a martyr has made up his mind and is ready, it is generally understood that the time for martyrdom has come.”

Sir Curzon Wylie (October 5, 1848—July 1, 1909)
Dhingra had now made up his mind. In July 1908, he deliberately joined the National Indian Association. This Association was doing its best to discourage Indian students from the militant path. Important British dignitaries attended their functions. Dhingra denounced Savarkar and other revolutionaries in the company of appropriate persons. He soon secured the trust of Miss Emma Josephine Beck, the secretary of the National Indian Association, and came to know the timings of visits of important English guests attending various functions. Eventually the opportunity came and Dhingra took full advantage of it. Having decided on his mission, Dhingra left India House to show that he disagreed with Savarkar. He took lodgings with Mrs Harris at 108 Ledbury Road, London W11 after Easter of 1909.

Curzon Wyllie was a very ranking officer. Sir Curzon Wylie had entered the British Army in 1866 and the Indian Political Department in 1879. He had earned distinction in the Afghan War of 1879-80, in Oudh, in Nepal, in Central India and above all in Rajputana where he rose to the highest rank in the Service. In 1901 he was chosen to be political aide-de-camp to the Secretary of State for India. He was also the head of the Secret Police, a fact not mentioned in contemporary British newspapers. He was trying to get information about Savarkar and the revolutionaries. They, in turn, tried to find about the operations of the British Secret Police. Wyllie planted an informer in India House. His name was Kirtikar and he pretended to be a student of dentistry. Savarkar found out who Kirtikar really was. When exposed and threatened with life, Kirtikar gave all the information he had about the police operations to Savarkar.

Savarkar joined Grays Inn on June 26, 1906. After completion of his studies, he should have been called to the Bar on May 5, 1909. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Harnam Singh passed final examination. Sir Curzon Wyllie was trying to ensure that Savarkar and Harnam Singh were not called to the Bar. As a result, Harnam Singh was informed that “no further proceedings will be taken against him but he will be admonished by the Treasurer in the presence of the Bench.” Savarkar was to be called to answer three charges :-

That by assisting in the circulation of pamphlets and by taking part in seditious meetings, he incited the Nation of India to revolt.

That he advocated assassination

That he expressed approval of assassination.

Savarkar was allowed time till May 22, in which to frame his reply. The reply was considered on the May 26, by the Benchers. The trial was held in camera. Therefore, evidence for prosecution which would not have been admitted in an open court was permitted. New charges were being added even when the trial was half way through. Two official detectives who had shadowed Savarkar for two years were testified. Their reports were submitted. Letters by Savarkar which were in the possession of Government of India and those used in the Nasik Conspiracy trial of Babarao Savarkar were translated and given to Grays Inn. Savarkar was cross-examined by some of the eminent Barristers on June 9. Just three weeks later i.e. on July 1, 1909 Sir Wyllie himself was shot dead by Dhingra.
On June 8, 1909, Babarao (Ganesh) Savarkar, elder brother of Veer Savarkar, was sentenced to Transportation for Life. All his earthly possessions, including saucepans and broom, were confiscated. His wife Yesu was left homeless, penniless and destitute. (She sought refuge in local crematorium for some time. She never saw her husband again and died childless in 1918). The prosecution could only prove that he had published four historical poems, which were construed as seditious. Three days later, Viceroy Lord Minto sent a telegram to the Secretary of State for India, “Ganesh Damodar Savarkar convicted under section 121 and 124A of the India Penal Code and sentenced to transportation for life and forfeiture of property.”

The deportation of Babarao Savarkar enraged the revolutionaries in London. As a high officer in charge of India, Sir Curzon Wylie could not escape their wrath. His days were numbered.

Preparing for the assassination
Dhingra was personally acquainted with Curzon Wyllie. Wyllie had received a letter from Kundan Lal Dhingra (Madan Lal’s eldest brother). On April 13, 1909, Wyllie wrote to Madan Lal suggesting that he should meet Wyllie. Dhingra pretended that he wanted to dicuss contents of that letter. On July 1, 1909, several prominent Britishers (including Curzon Wylie) and Indians were to attend a meeting of the National Indian Association at Jehangir Hall in the first floor of the Imperial Institute. The reception was given in the name of Lady Lyall, wife of Sir Alfred Lyall. Madanlal was an Associate Member of the Association. That is how he could approach Wyllie.

Savarkar discussed his plans with his elder brother. Savarkar asked Gyan Chand Varma “not to leave London and to attend the function at Imperial Institute.” On July 29, 1909, Dhingra finalised his plans. He met Savarkar on that evening in Bipin Chandra Pal’s house. Niranjan Pal was present at that meeting. Dhingra seemed to be in good spirit. Savarkar and Dhingra spoke to each other with great affection. Savarkar apprised Dhingra of the statement he was to make after assassinating Curzon Wylie. Niranjan Pal typed the statement and Savarkar asked Dhingra to memorise it. Savarkar then gifted Dhingra with a Belgian-make Broning pistol and took his leave with great affection. Dhingra was overcome with emotion. Savarkar said, “Do not show me your face again if you fail this time.” Dhingra reassured him that this would not happen. The two friends departed.
On July 1, 1909, Dhingra went as planned to the meeting at Imperial Institute. As luck would have it he had forgotten to take the invitation pass. However, as he was an Associate Member, he gained entry after signing in the visitors’ book. Koregankar also arrived armed with a pistol. After the meeting was over, Curzone Wyllie seemed ready to leave. Aji jaao na. kya karte ho! prompted Koregaonkar to Dhingra. Dhingra now approached Curzon Wylie under the pretext of talking to him. The two opened the glass door and left the hall.

The assassination
As they reached the landing, Dhingra lowered his voice as if he wanted to discuss something confidential. Curzon Wylie brought his ear close to Dhingra. Sensing the opportunity, Dhingra removed the Colt revolver from his right coat pocket and pumped two bullets at point-blank range. The time was 11.20 pm. As Curzon Wyllie reeled, Dhingra fired two more bullets. A Parsee doctor Cawas Lalkaka tried to come in between but Dhingra fired at him as well. However, Dhingra’s attempt to shoot himself failed and he was overpowered. Even in this situation, Dhingra wrestled with his captors and even brought down one of them breaking his ribs. Dhingra was pinned to the ground. Only after his revolver was taken away did his captors heave a sigh of relief. In the scuffle, Dhingra’s spectacles were thrown away. Dhingra calmly told his captors to handover his spectacles. When the examining doctor felt Dhingra’s pulse, he was astounded to find that it was ‘even’. After his arrest, the Police Officer asked Dhingra, "Do you want us to inform any of your friends of your arrest?" Dhingra cleverly replied, "There is no need. They will know about my arrest in tomorrow’s newspapers." The Police were trying to find out if they could implicate any of Dhingra’s friends. He proved a match for them. Dhingra was taken to Walton Street Police station.

The trial
The British Press made some vicious allegations against Dhingra, taking advantage of remarks made by an ex-Army officer at the inquest on Wyllie’s death. This was held at Kensington Town Hall before Coroner Mr C Luxmoore Drew. Dhingra refused to take part in the proceedings. At the inquest, Captain Charles Rollerton, an ex-Army officer of Broadhurst Gardens, Hampstead was present. This witness suggested the possibility of Dhingra having taken the Indian drug called Bhang because of his half dazed and dreamy manner. He added that natives of India very often took Bhang if they were going to perpetrate a deed of this kind. The Coroner asked Miss Beck, the Secretary of the National Indian Association, if she noticed whether Dhingra was under the influence of some drug; but her reply was in the negative. Dhingra, she said, seemed in a normal condition and was quite calm. During the trial, Mrs Harris, Dhingra’s landlady, said she did not think he took drugs. Dr John Buchnan of Vauxhall Bridge was the first doctor to arrive at the scene of assassination. Dhingra, said the doctor, was perfectly calm. He seemed the calmest man in the crowd. During his trial Dhingra was examined by psychiatrists to decide if he was mentally subnormal. Their tests were negative.

At the inquest held at Westminster before Coroner Mr John Troutbeck, Dhingra expressed his deep regret for the accidental death of Lalkaka. He stated that had Lalkaka not come in the way he would not have been killed. He had no reason to kill him.

When produced before Mr Hoarce Smith the Magistrate of Westminster Police Court, Dhingra said, " I do not plead for mercy: nor do I recognise your authority over me…" Dhingra was committed to the Sessions Court. Dhingra bluntly asked the Court, "...If the Germans have no right to rule over England what right have the English got to rule over India ?" During the trial Indians were not allowed inside the Court.

In his last days, Dhingra had wished that his clothes, books and other belongings should be sold and the money thus raised be given to the National Fund. However, these were confiscated by the Metropolitan Police (of London). Two trunks were taken away by Chief Inspector McCarthy. Dhingra had given a letter authorising Nitinsen Dwarakadas to be the owner of his personal belongings. But when the case came to Bow Street Magistrtate’s court on December 31, 1909 it was ruled that as Dhingra had made no will the police were not bound to return Dhingra’s belongings to Nitinsen! (London Times, January 1, 1910).

When Dhingra shot dead Curzon Wyllie, his brother Bhajan Lal was in London studying Law at Grays Inn. Four days after the event Bhajan Lal attended the public meeting to condemn Madan Lal. On account of that, Madan Lal refused to see Bhajan Lal when the latter visited him in the Brixton prison. Soon after their brother was hanged, his brothers dropped the surname Dhingra, with the exception of Dr Bihari Lal. As their first names ended in Lal they adopted that as the surname. e.g Chaman Lal Dhingra became Chaman Lal. (In a similar manner, many Indian freedom fighters changed their names so that their relations would not be identified and harassed by the British authorities.). When Veer Savarkar went to visit Dhingra, he said, "I have come to seek your darshan". Both were overwhelmed on seeing each other.

The day of Dhingra’s hanging finally dawned. It was August 17, 1909. Several of Dhingra’s friends made efforts to meet him for one last time in the Pentonville prison. At Savarkar’s suggestion, JS Master gave a written application to that effect. He contended that he was Dhingra’s close friend and hence be allowed inside the prison to meet him. He forwarded his application to the Under-Sheriff of London and the Home Office and awaited their response. His request was turned away at both places. Dhingra had assumed that he would die without meeting his friends. However, to the end, he remained calm and composed in the face of imminent death. He enjoyed a good slumber on the previous night and had to be woken-up on the day of his hanging. He performed his morning chores as usual and even had a hearty breakfast. Meanwhile, several Indian youth had mournfully gathered outside the gates of the prison. They were however denied entry inside. Entry was also denied to the waiting journalists. At the stroke of nine, Madan Lal Dhingra began his last journey to the gallows.

A Christian preacher named Hudson walked-up to him to say the final Christian prayer for him. But Dhingra turned him away saying that he was a Hindu. The Deputy Under-Sheriff of London Metcalf read out the death warrant to Dhingra in the presence of Deputy Governor Hales of Pentonville prison and asked him the usual questions. But Dhingra ignored their questions and walked calmly to the noose. His bravery left the accompanying officers dumb-founded. Officer Pierpoint stood at the hangman’s noose waiting for Dhingra. Dhingra smiled at him and ascended the steps to the platform. He himself placed the noose round his neck. Soon thereafter, the wooden platform underneath was withdrawn. Dhingra’s body dropped eight feet and lay hanging. As per convention, his limp body was left hanging for half an hour. When his body was brought down, it showed no trace of fear. Master was allowed to be present at the post-mortem examination which was performed by Dr. Wyliss Shroeder and Asst. Medical Officer Dr. Francis Forewood of Pentonville prison. He wrote the death certificate in the presence of five witnesses. Master again requested that he be allowed to claim Dhingra’s dead body so that his final rites could be performed. However, this request was turned down. The Times, London of August 18, 1909 reported on page 7 column 2, "Shortly after 9, death was announced. Pierpoint was the executioner. An application for leave to have the body cremated was refused and it will be buried in accordance with the usual custom, within the walls of prison."

Then Master followed Under-Sheriff outside the prison. The correspondent for the Daily Mirror interviewed Master. He asked, "Will Dhingra be considered a martyr by the Indians?" Master replied, "Certainly. He has laid down his life for his country’s good. Whether his idea of this ‘good’ was right or wrong is a matter of opinion."

Madan Lal Dhingra went to the gallows in Pentonville prison in London on August 17, 1909. This prison was built between 1840 and 1842. Two Indian revolutionaries went to the gallows here. Madan Lal Dhingra on August 17, 1909, and Udham Singh on July 31, 1940.

Dhingra wished that his last rites according to Hindu dharma should be performed on his dead body and it should be cremated. Many Hindus petitioned to the Home Secretary Mr Herbert Gladstone that Dhingra’s body should be handed over to them, as Brahmins were ready to perform the last rites. This request was denied! The last wish of a man sent to the gallows was denied! His body was put in a coffin, which was buried within the prison premises.

(Note :- The Cremation Society of England was founded in 1874. So, cremation was definitely available in London in 1909)

After Dhingra went to the gallows, the Times, London wrote an editorial (July 24, 1909) titled ‘Conviction of Dhingra’. The editorial said, "The nonchalance displayed by the assassin was of a character, which is happily unusual in such trials in this country. He asked no questions. He maintained a defiance of studied indifference. He walked smiling from the dock."

Last statement
As desired by Gyan Chand Varma, Sardar Singh Rana , who was then in Paris, published Dhingra’s last testament on a postcard along with his photograph. Below the words Vande Mataram, was written August 17, 1909 (the day of Dhingra’s martyrdom) and below this were written the following words, "To the sacred and inspiring memory of patriot Madan Lal Dhingra, who died for his country." Rana sent copies of these to Veer Savarkar who was in London through Govind Amin. Savarkar in turn sent a large number of these copies to India. The Government soon banned it. Nonetheless, it became public. Madan Lal Dhingra’s final statement was as inspiring as his actions. Titled Challenge it read as follows:

Challenge
"I admit the other day; I attempted to shed English blood as an humble revenge for the inhuman hangings and deportations of patriotic Indian youths. In this attempt, I have consulted none but my own conscience; I have conspired with none, but my own duty. I believe that a nation held down in bondage with the help of foreign bayonets is in a perpetual state of war. Since open battle is rendered impossible to a disarmed race, I attacked by surprise; since guns were denied to me, I drew forth my pistol and fired. As a Hindu I felt that a wrong done to my country is an insult to God. Her cause is the cause of Sri Ram! Her services are the services of Sri Krishna! Poor in health and intellect, a son like myself has nothing else to offer to the Mother but his own blood and so I have sacrificed the same on her altar.

"The only lesson required in India at present is to learn how to die and the only way to teach it, is by dying ourselves. Therefore I die and glory in my martyrdom! This war of Independence will continue between India and England, so long as the Hindu and the English races last (if the present unnatural relation does not cease!). My only prayer to God is: May I be reborn of the same Mother and may I re-die in the same sacred cause, till the cause is successful and she stands free for the good of humanity and the glory of God!"

SKorean court has awarded one and half year in jail to captain Jasprit Chawla and eight months to chief office Shyam Chetan.

After Mumbai attack we heard lot of great talks Now time has come to put some of them in action.To begin with

Packing the books for courier has turned out to be extremely daunting task. Not only the courier costs have gone up drastically but envelop for the book is equally expensive. Each envelop costs Rs.3/-. We hit on an innovative idea to reduce the cost, we started packing the books with the paper which is use to cover the books of my son. It is very cheap option but equally laborious.

Friends, as promised I have been sending the book to various Institutes, Corporate and Government Bodies. Collecting the address turned out to be the biggest problem. AICTE website has age old list, it does not list the address of all the management institutes. Corporate addresses are equally difficult. The CII member’s directory which I bought for Rs.1500/- ; is worse then AICTE’s. I can not explain the pathetic condition of the data.

The whole problem gets compounded when people do not even acknowledge the receipt of book. Acknowledgment is less then 0.5%.

But some of the letters that I have received is truly heart warming. I am obliged to the individuals who have taken time to reply.

The book ‘Business of Freedom – An Initiative for School of Indian Management’ was dedicated to the society at a simple but emotional function held at Keshavrao Ghaisas Auditorium of Dahanukar College, Vile Parle East, Mumbai on Saturday 19th April 2008.

The book is written by Shri Sandeep Singh, former Vice President (Sales & Marketing) at Sahara News and published by him in association with Vishwa Adhyayan Kendra, Mumbai.

Shri K. Narasimhan, MD Committ Technologies a close friend and class fellow of Shri Sandeep Singh conducted the proceedings of the evening very efficiently.

The programme commenced with offering bouquets to the guests on stage followed by lighting of the lamp and vedic prayer by Shri Ramesh Subramaniam of Seva International..

Dr Satish Modh, Dy. General Manager Air India and President of Vishwa Adhyayan Kendra welcomed the guests. He felt that when 99% of all the management books available today are wholly based on western thought and philosophy BoF was a much needed book from Indian examples and history. He recalled the several lectures of Shri Sandeep Singh that he had arranged on the book and informed the audience that he was thrilled by the instant enthusiasm the subject kindled in young students.

Shri Ratan Sharda, Senior IT Consultant and General Secretary of Vishwa Adhyayan Kendra informed that he had a very pleasant experience in editing the book. He mentioned that despite his busy schedule he accepted to edit the book due to the inspirational character of Shri Sandeep Singh who had resigned his lucrative job to work for a noble cause and author the book.

In his emotionally charged speech Shri Sandeep Singh thanked everyone who played a minute role though, in helping to publish his dream book. He said that the collection of Rs 100/- from known and unknown individuals was an unforgettable and unimaginable experience. He said he realized that the new generation had little or no knowledge about our freedom fighters. The ignorance is more so when it comes to their managerial qualities. Therefore he decided to compare the thoughts of freedom fighters with the thoughts of management gurus. “My intention is not to say that one copied the idea from the other, but to explore the 'science' and the 'art' of management. Science will remain universal, but art has to be contextual “he added.
“I am also not suggesting that there is nothing to learn from the West. All I am saying is that there is lot to learn from our freedom fighters and thought leaders of the 19th and the 20th centuries, leave aside our scriptures “he emphasized.
“After going through the works from the year 1800 to 1950 (management as a concept also started along with industrial development during the same time), I concluded that India, to a great extent, missed out on the Industrial Revolution because most of the available talent in India put all its energy into the Independence movement, sacrificing all else in the process “he remarked.
He added “In short, the talent of that period opted for the 'business of freedom' rather than for the 'business of profit “.
Explaining the choice of word business in the context of freedom struggle he explained “The word 'business' has recently acquired a negative connotation. This was not always the case. In ancient India doing business came with social responsibility. It is only now that modern business has started exploring Corporate Social Responsibility”.
He however stressed that there was no profit motive behind the book; the idea was to share a thought. He expressed the hope that within one year he would like to take the message of the book to 1, 00,000 people. He specially thanked Vishwa Adhyayan Kendra for joining him in publishing the book.
Speaking on the occasion after launching the book, Shri Deepak Ghaisas, Vice-Chairman and Director, i-Flex Solutions said that he was thrilled to know that a book could be sold before being written and 800 people could commit to buy 3000 copies. He congratulated Shri Sandeep Singh for taking a very difficult, rare and bold decision of resigning his job to write a book for the benefit of the society and not for personal profit.
“From ancient times Bharat has contributed immensely to many fields but since documentation and copyright were not done, as a principle, nothing is known to the world about these wonderful achievements” he said. Shri Deepak Ghaisas felt that many more books giving the Indian perspective of management were necessary and thanked Shri Sandeep Singh for his worthy initiative.
Shri Ghaisas explained that contribution and commitment though appearing to be similar are distinctly different. Commitment is more powerful than contribution. He felt that Shri Sandeep Singh has not just contributed but rendered his commitment to society.
Shri Deepak Ghaisas confessed that he was very greatly impressed by the Chapter 10 on Gandhi in the book. He said it surprised him to realize that Mahatma Gandhi was extremely good in marketing his ideas than many others of his time.
Shri Deepak Ghaisas expressed the hope that by the hard work of the likes of Shri Sandeep Singh we will see an Indian System being followed the world over as we had seen the American System and Japanese System in the past. He felt we need to do it before China.
The programme concluded after a soulful rendering of vande mataram by Shri Satyaprakash Misra and Shri Narasimhan delivering the vote of thanks.

Mr. Ratan Sharda

Ratan Sharda is Chief Consultant with an Indian IT company, Eastern Software Systems Pvt. Ltd that specializes in ERP solutions. He is a postgraduate in Economics and a Diploma holder in Textile processing; and has vast experience in textiles, publishing and Information Technology. He is founder general secretary of Vishwa Adhyayan Kendra (Centre for International Studies) and active in many social organizations. Editing and publishing are his passion and take up much of his spare time. He works in English as well as Hindi. He has ten books to his credit so far, of which three have come out in last three months itself.

This is regarding the book “Business of Freedom” on management which I am writing.

There was a thought in my mind from a long time, as to why India missed out on Industrial Revolution, especially when India is a part of Information revolution and India was a part of Agriculture Revolution.

After going through the works from 1800 to 1950, I concluded that India missed out to a great extent on Industrial revolution because majority of the talent went into Independence movement. Some of the best slogans/ punch lines written almost a century back still ignite passion among we Indians e.g. Vande Mataram, Inquilab Zindabad, Swaraj is My Birth Right, Give Me Blood, I Will Give You Freedom etc. Some of the best organized events till date are; Dandi March, Bomb Explosion by Bhagat Singh in Assembly without killing anyone etc.

In short, the talent of the period opted for “Business of Freedom” rather than “Business of Profit”.

In the book, I am comparing thought’s of Freedom Fighters with the thoughts of Management Guru’s. The idea is to explore both “science” and “art” part of management.

I plan to print 7000 copies; the breakup of the same will be as follows:

1. 5000 copies to contributors of Rs.100/-
2.1500 copies to the director of the 1500 AICTE recognized management institutes.
3. 100 copies to 100 top management institutes world wide
4. 100 copies for media review
5. 300 copies to the top 300 CEO’s of the country, (I will be attempting to send it to 1000 CEO’s, if money permits)

I am also the printer of the book, and I am collecting Rs.100/- from 5000 people and generating Rs.5 lakhs only. All the contributors get acknowledgment in the book as well as a copy of the book.
